A Sustainable Solid Waste Management System: An Integrated Approach to Transform Lucknow into a Sustainable City

Abstract
In urban areas, solid waste management is a very difficult task for conserving our natural environment conservation across the globe. Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC) is the 10th largest solid waste generating metropolitan in the country produces a total of 1500 tons of solid waste per day, and the average per-capita per day solid waste generation is 0.65 kilogram during 2021. LMC is unable to manage such a huge amount of solid waste which is growing the number of dumping grounds and garbage mounting at different locations in the city. The present research article is an attempt to study solid waste management and presents a prospect of a sustainable approach for managing municipal solid waste management in the coming future to transform Lucknow into a sustainable city. The integrated solid waste management (ISWM) approach is the best approach for managing solid waste along with a strategy of extended producer responsibility model of a circular economy. SSWMS is a comprehensive approach that applies the four R’s of recycle, reduce, reuse, and refuse to have a sustainable waste management system. The research article attempted to explain the problem of solid waste management in the city in the future. Eventually, the concluding remarks advocate an innovative method to manage solid waste materials contributing to achieving the city’s sustainable development goal.
